The daylong festivities are marked by processions, dance and music with an array of brightly coloured objects called Kaavadi; both tall and short, covered with glittering artificial flowers, and some bedecked with peacock feathers. Devotees carry these Kaavadis on their heads and shoulders as they dance around the temple premises to the accompanying reverberating percussion beats, which generate a mesmeric rhythm.
